New England Champions
The Raiders of 1955-56 proved themselves to be one of the greatest hockey teams ever to don the red and white of MHS. After clinching the GBI title for the tenth time in Melrose High's history, the Raiders went on to win the biggest prize of all, the New England Hockey Tournament, which was held in Provi-dence, Rhode Island. Melrose's star center, Don Macinnis, who was voted the most outstanding player in the tourney, scored six goals and got seven assists in the three games to break the individ-val scoring record. With Macinnis scoring four goals, the classy Raiders wolloped LaSalle, Rhode Island 9-1 in the opening round. The hard skating, smooth passing Melrose sextet scored six goals in the second game and defeated Hope, Rhode Island 6-2. As Ed Smith scored the two winning goals and Billy Tryder turned in a dazzling performance to earn the award for the best goaltender in the tournament, the rustling Red Raiders clinched the title by defeating St.Dominic's of Maine 4-2. The champions displayed true sportsmanship and fine team spirit throughout the season, helping to make the 1955-56 season a great one for MHS. (Excerpt from Melrose High School Yearbook)
