Middlesex League Champions
1982 Division I Superbowl Finalists
“It was a season we shall never forget the cheers and the tears,” commented football coach Bruce W. Macpherson about the team's outstanding effort this year. No one in the class of '83 is likely to forget the glorious season in which eighteen seniors led the Raiders straight to the top of Melrose's first superbowl The individuals who made up the team have gained fame and honors throughout the state. In fact, seven seniors were named Middlesex League first team All-Stars They are Jim Morris, John Crowther, Chris Hickey on offense; Eric Johnson, Jim Muse, and Steve Mastrangelo on defense. Four starting seniors were also named to the Boston Globe's Division 1 All-Star Team. They are Chris Hickey, Doug Prentice, Jim Morris and John Crowther The team could not have made it without the leadership and guidance of the coaches who trained them for victory The seniors remember the years together from Pop Warner — "We thought it would never end.” They stayed together through new coaches — new systems — new terms (Beep, Beep, Adi, Adi Oh) until in 1980 came Coach Macpherson, and our seniors were "the first litter of puppies.” A man of experience. Coach Mac was voted Middlesex League Coach of the Year for two out of only three seasons. He was also named 1982 Division 1 Coach of the Year, and says he owes much to Melrose High Athletic Director Anthony Deteso and to his assistant coaches. The team, too, is grateful to Glen Pines, Emerson Dickie, and Scott Crowell. They will nor forget "Ace” in the trainers room, or their trainers. And the class of 1983 will not forget their football team, who gave so much to our senior year and created special school spirit that will never die"(Exerpt from Class of 1983 Yearbook)
